Review: Smashbox Brow Tech

My brows are a hot mess. Not only are they unruly, there are chunks missing, such as part of my right arch. No amount of plucking, trimming, shaping, or filling in seems to make them look even slightly normal. During one of my frequent Sephora.com trips, I peeked at some of the brow products, checked out a few of them on MakeupAlley, and finally settled on Smashbox Brow Tech because of all the glowing reviews.

Brow Tech is a small pot containing three different brow products: a lightweight colorless wax, a light brow shadow, and a darker brow shadow. Both the matte shadows are nicely pigmented, not too heavy, not too sheer, so it looks perfectly natural in my brows. Brow Tech is available in five various shades- Blonde, Taupe/Soft Brown, Auburn, Brunette, and Dark Brown. All of the shades come with two colors, so you can customize the right color for you.  At first I was going to buy Dark Brown, but after thinking about it, I settled on Brunette. I'm glad I chose Brunette, because it's the perfect shade for my brows.

Even more than the brow shadows, I love the wax! After it dries, it holds my brows perfectly in place for hours and gives the brow shadow 9-10 hours of wear. It's thick but lightweight, and it dries to a soft matte finish with no crunchiness in sight. Like I said, the results are extremely natural looking and polished. If I happen to run out of the wax before I run out of the shadow, the wax is also sold separately for $20 at Ulta.

From all the reviews I've read, everyone uses this a different way. Some people do the shadow, then the wax, some mix the two, etc. Personally, I have a very specific way to use it that works perfectly (for me, anyway).
  • First, I use my angled brow brush to swipe the wax over my entire brow. I let it dry for about 30 seconds while I apply the wax to the other brow, and brush through them with a spoolie.
  • Next, I use the lighter color of the two shadows to fill in my entire brow with small strokes.
  • Then, I just use the darker color to fill in any more visible bald spots with small strokes. After that, I just brush through them again, and they look perfect.
The whole shebang takes about a minute and half, and my brows look perfectly polished, filled in, and professionally done.

  2. I wish I could get this but $25 is a lot since I just bought a new Lorac blush and bare minerals foundation (splurges :D) I've heard good things about the milani brow kit- I may try that out. Great in-depth reveiw! Btw, since you now own the naked pallete I enjoy using the shades naked and buck on my eyebrows so you should try that out, it's just not as convenient as a kit.
